Fees Free is available to full-time and part-time students who are in their first year of study in 2024. If you have your National Student Number (NSN), you can determine your eligibility for Fees Free study on the Fees Free website.
Note that the Government has confirmed Fees Free for the first year of study will finish at the end of 2024. From 2025, Fees Free will cover the final year instead. Full details of this change are yet to be confirmed and we will update our Fees Free information when we have been advised of the changes.

How do I check my eligibility for Fees Free
To check your eligibility for Fees Free:
- Find your National Student Number (NSN) by contacting your school or the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) If you have completed your enrolment at the University of Otago, you can also find your NSN in eVision in your Academic Record on the My Details page.
- Use your NSN to check your Fees Free eligibility on the Fees Free website.
If your Fees Free eligibility is confirmed the University will receive automatic notification, and you will not be required to pay tuition fees or student services fees for the applicable year of eligibility.
If your Fees Free eligibility is unconfirmed, you will need to complete a statutory declaration before the University of Otago can acknowledge you as a Fees Free student.
